Low-rise
- Anywhere from an inch or so below the belly button to really low (like about six inches from the crotch to the waistband!) Just enough to conceal your family jewels. This is one great way to show off that pierced navel.
Ankle interest - Slits (vents) at the ankle and modest flares are in.
Vintage look
- Whisker treatments (worn, lighter marks radiating out from the crotch), worn patches on backside. and light washes are common in men's jeans. Dirty denim weaves brown filler yarn in with the indigo to give that "dirty" appearance which is very popular. Denim is unique because it is woven with two yarn colors: the indigo yarn and the "filler" yarn, which is undyed (turn your jeans inside out and you'll see the white inside.) The extreme distressed look is very popular in 2010.
Subtle embellishments
- Crystals, grommets, studs in moderation. Coloured waistbands and fly add style appeal. However the overly decorated denim that was stylish a few years back (feathers, braiding, tape, etc.) is pretty much over.
Stonewashed - Most jeans today are stonewashed, but not in pumice stones like in earlier days. Now enzymes, sand, ceramic balls and other methods give men's jeans their worn look.
Cut
- Bootcuts are slim through the legs, with a slight flare at the ankle to accommodate a boot (about a 16-18 inch opening). Flares are slim through the legs, flaring right above the ankle -- to about an 21+ inch opening. Bellbottoms start to flare at the knee, resulting in a 22+ inch leg opening. Regardless of the leg or waistband, the look is definitely sleek and slim today.
